Utah Maternity Insurance
Since Utah has the highest birth rate per capita in the country, having maternity insurance for most families is essential to keeping their costs down and being able to afford childbirth. And obviously there is much that needs to be covered. From pre-natal education, to vitamins, to the OB/GYN visits to labor and delivery, knowing how these are being covered can bring a lot of peace of mind to even this most stressful of events.
So what insurance companies in Utah cover maternity? One carrier does not cover it all unless you fund the pregnancy through an HSA and all of the others will cover it but only after varying deductibles. One thing to keep in mind as we discuss coverages is that the cost of childbirth will vary widely depending where you deliver, what your doctor charges, whether you have C-section or not and whether there were any complications or not. The costs can range anywhere from $3,500 on the very low end to upwards of $10,000 or more for a C-section birth. So let's go into a little detail on how each provider is going to cover the birth of your child:
SelectHealth- SelectHealth does offer maternity coverage on all of the regular health plans that they offer. You do have a $7,500 deductible to meet before they will cover any maternity costs. So you will be out of pocket for most of the maternity costs.
HumanaOne- HumanaOne does not currently offer maternity coverage currently. You are able fund the birth through your HSA and getting some tax help there, but otherwise, they will not cover it at all. Just remember there are other ways to help fund the labor and delivery fees through a hospital indemnity plan. Hospital plans will cover most of the charges that you will incur while in the hospital other than your OB/GYN visits and delivery costs. Because there is some things to discuss about how this actually works, please contact us so we can explain it in greater detail.
Assurant- Assurant actually has the strongest maternity coverage in Utah as far as deductibles go. They have levels of deductibles, and the lower the maternity deductible, the higher the premium naturally. They have deductibles as low as $2,500. So if you want the least amount of exposure due to maternity, you may pay a little more, but you will only have to cover as little as $2,500 of your child's birth.
Regence BlueCross BlueShield- Regence BCBS has a $5,000 maternity deductible on all of their plans they offer.
Altius- Altius does offer maternity coverage but with a $7,500 deductible.
There are alternative ways to help cover the costs of maternity. Usually the least expensive and cost effective is getting some separate supplemental or indemnity plans instead of adding the regular maternity insurance through your health plans. Again, this is something you would want to discuss in detail with us to make it clear how it would work, so please contact us if you wish to find out more.
What if you are already pregnant?
Most insurance companies will not cover you if you are currently pregnant and trying to get new health insurance. One option you could have is contacting Medicaid to see if you qualify. Medicaid will cover your costs if you do qualify and they do loosen up their rules (a little) if you are pregnant. If you don't qualify for Medicaid, there are discount plans available or contact us and we can show you how to negotiate prices that would be much lower than it would normally cost.
